Elegant Waterfront Wedding in Puerto Rico
Today I’m so excited to share with you the wedding of my sister and brother-in-law. Not only did I serve as their wedding planner, but also as the maid of honor. Definitely a challenge, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Having both grown up in South Florida, Emily and Jonathan are huge Disney fans (like most native Floridians). As such they got engaged under the glow of Cinderella’s Castle at the Magic Kingdom. Jonathan led her to the Wishing Well and politely asked a Cast Member to photograph them making a wish. As they tossed their coins into the well, Jonathan dropped to one knee and asked, “Emily, will you make my wish come true?” With tears in her eyes and a smile across her face, she gladly accepted. Of course, Mickey made an appearance at the wedding on Emily’s garter, under her shoes and on the cake 🙂
However, having a wedding at Disney wasn’t the plan. Instead they opted to have an elegant waterfront wedding in Puerto Rico. Our entire family is from and mostly still live in Puerto Rico. We are extremely close to our extended family, so this was the perfect location to include them in the celebration.
The wedding ceremony and reception was held at our aunt and uncle’s home. Our aunts both have degrees in interior design and gifted my sister with the gift of decor for the wedding. From the centerpieces to the alter, the seashell bouquets to the flower girl dish and the ring bearer dish. No portion of the decor was left untouched by their impeccable eyes. It looked spectacular!
Our cousin served as the ceremony musician (he’s a professional pianist in LA), our other cousin served as the videograper (she’s working out in LA as well) and Jonathan’s father gladly served as the officiant, since he is an Episcopalian minister in Miami. All the siblings and cousins served as the wedding party to top off all of their other duties.
We danced to the sounds of a merengue band until it felt like our feet would fall off. SO fun! For the Hora Loca (a Hispanic wedding tradition of a party within a party. This high-energy celebration lasts about 45 min and is Carnaval-esque complete with maracas, straw hats, whistles and other noisemakers), I surprised the bride and groom with a batucada (live traveling band) with stilt walkers!! The guests still comment about that.
